Who owes what

Nigeria’s public debt stood at ₦166.79trn on Q2 2026. States and the FCT account for ₦14.01trn of it (8%). Federal debt dominates the total — but measured against what they earn, many states carry heavy loads, and ₦501.9bn of external-debt service was deducted from state FAAC allocations at source in the last 12 months.

Domestic debt: federal vs states & FCT

Two separate charts, because federal domestic debt is ~20× larger and would flatten the state line.
